John Hosbrook, believed to be the first settler here, arrived in Madeira in 1794, followed by John Jones in 1795.  The Marietta & Cincinnati Railroad built a station here in 1872 (now a restaurant called Choo Choo).  It's named Madeira, after John Madeira, a treasurer of the railroad, and was incorporated as a village in 1910.  The first church building in Madeira was a Methodist Church constructed in 1873.  Families are drawn here for its excellent school system-boasting new elementary and middle schools and a renovated high school (Madeira High is a National Blue Ribbon School).  St. Gertrude, a Catholic elementary school, is here.  There is a variety of home styles- contemporary, Cape Cod, Colonial and Ranch- in a range of prices.  The neighborhood shopping district includes a number of specialty shops.  Development is strictly controlled to preserve the quiet, gracious sense of community.  Madeira is convenient to downtown Cincinnati and to many office and industrial parks to the north-east.
